The Fourth of July, Independence Day, is a day to celebrate…with friends, with family, and with community. And we do not celebrate quietly…there are parades, fireworks, barbecues, picnics…all sorts of gatherings where we can be together.
However you celebrate, there is a feeling of freedom, excitement and carefree abandon in the air.
There are fireworks popping all day long, not just at night, the smell of barbecue on every street, the colors of red, white and blue on almost every person you see…a sense of unity is in the air. You can’t help but feel a sense of elation, of being lifted up and of being part of something bigger than yourself.
It is a good day. It marks not only the independence of our country but it is also a continued expression of our sense of community and togetherness.
Today, we celebrated with friends and community via a parade my daughter was walking, or more accurately, tumbling, in. Then, we continued our celebration with family by joining together for a barbecue at my aunt’s house.
Today, I feel connected to the people in my world; to those I see often and those I see less often. With good conversation, good food and team effort, I became part of something bigger. In a time when it’s very easy to fall into your own world and loose connections while you manage the day to day, it was a wonderful gift and reminder. I hope today was a day that you were able to celebrate in a way that makes you feel connected to the world.
Happy Fourth of July!
